GLORIA BURSEY has been a writer and photographer for most of her life. She also has had a lifelong interest in the roles of men and women, separately and together, in the world today. After graduating from Lindenwood College for Women, she married Roger Slykhouse and lived for almost a year in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where he was an engineer for ARAMCO. They moved back to Grand Rapids and became proud parents of three children
.
In the 1970’s she began publishing a magazine, “GLORY”, which explored the relationships between men and women as women began to expand their lives outside the home and to emerge as a force in the working world.
From 1987-1996 she was the editor/publisher of “CHOICES for the rest of your life”, a magazine exploring the changing life styles of people “39” and over, with a circulation of almost 40.000 in West Michigan. The most often asked question from her readers was “ How do I meet somebody new?“. Throughout those nine years she began examining this subject editorially. In 1998 she began researching love and romance by interviewing couples who had found happiness in new relationships. The result of all this has been her book, “50 WAYS TO FIND ROMANCE AFTER 50”, which has been recently published.
Most exciting, she learned that it is never too late to fall in love. After being widowed for over 20 years she found Harry Borgman on the internet and they are having a great time in spite of living 100 miles apart. They have traveled to Newfoundland and Mexico twice and see each other for very long weekends. They are enjoying their new-found relationship.
Along with her writing, Gloria has earned a reputation for her photography. Her photo-history exhibit of “12 OUTSTANDING WEST MICHIGAN WOMEN” opened at the Gerald R. Ford Museum. It is now hanging at the Women’s Resource Center. Her photos and stories have appeared in many publications, including the VATAN, in Istanbul, Turkey.
